My recipe for Apple Crisp is so easy to make and delivers that warm cinnamon apple filling with an amazing crisp topping made with just 4 pantry staple ingredients – oats, brown sugar, butter, and flour.
I like to start the cook my apples before assembly – just until they release their juices – which gives you a perfect result every time.
This is certainly a perfect Fall recipe when local apples are in season, but it is great anytime.

Ingredients
Apple Layer
- 2 pounds tart apples such as Honey Crisp, Northern Spy, or Granny Smith – about 3 large apples
- 4 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 tablespoon apple juice or water
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
Crisp Topping
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3/4 cup rolled oats

Step by Step Instructions Apple Layer
Step 1
Peel core and slice your apples
Step 2
Combine all of the apple layer ingredients together in a pan and heat gently until the apple just start to release their liquid
Step 3
Test for sweetness level and adjust to taste – remembering the topping will also be sweet, so you want a little tartness to balance it out
Step 4
Remove the pan from the heat and place the apples into your baking dish

Preheat the oven to 350 F
Step 2
Whisk the salt into the flour
Step 3
Rub the butter into the flour until you have a fine crumb
Step 5
Stir in the brown sugar making sure you break up any lumps and then stir in the oats
Step 6
Squeeze the topping by the handful to make some large clumps
Step 7
Layer the crisp mixture over the apples
Step 8
Bake for 30 – 40 minutes until golden and bubbling
